Where this character comes from

A pictograph of the sun: originally a circle with a dot in the centre, later squared off so it could be written with a brush. It means ‘sun’ and, by extension, ‘day’.

A way to remember it

A box with one line inside — the sun with a mark at its core.

Easy to confuse with

  • yuē‘To say’ (classical): wider and flatter than 日.
  • ‘Eye’: taller, with two lines inside instead of one.
